Shot on `Daffodil Day` in the small village of Mells in Somerset, this work is a desperate and futile attempt to decode the mysteries of Morris Dancing through semaphore. In a bid to understand the meaning of the dance I have analysed each movement of the dancers using the semaphore alphabet to see if their dance spells out its secret meaning. I am primarily a lens based artist whose practice explores how rituals and customs are codified and what this reveals about our contemporary relationships with our localities, histories and each other. My most recent work has focused on the English rural idyll, involving bellringers, morris dancers and beekeepers. I like to explore the limits and significance of the conventions and conservatism that make up the classic idea of English-ness, sensing the eccentric, transgressive and mythic forces that are at work beneath.
