During a visit to Madrid I found a postcard sent in 1937 by Antonio Perez, a soldier apparently fighting for the Republicans in the Spanish Civil War. It was addressed to his friend, Daniel Carande. The design is an army issue print from the Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party, a standard postcard issued to their soldiers. I visited the address on the postcard, in an area of Madrid called Lavapiés. The images and sounds I recorded there are shown here alongside archive footage from the Spanish Civil War. The narration is provided by the various men I encountered in Lavapiés, who were willing to read out the message on the postcard.
